Westby,
Wisconsin
Vernon County abuts the Mississippi River in
Southwestern Wisconsin. It is a beautiful area of rolling hills
that was once populated by the Sac, Fox and Winnebago Indian
tribes. Norwegian
immigrants
began to settle the area in 1848 and, in 1867, Ole
Westby built a general store that would serve as the anchor to what
would become the village of Westby, incorporated in 1896. The
current population is still mostly Norwegian, although the largest
Amish settlement in Wisconsin can be found here.
Located
on a ridge between
the Mississippi River's Coulee Region and the Kickapoo River Valley
at the intersection of HWY 14-61 & 27, Westby
is a small town full of heritage and culture
and
is a great
area for a family vacation
or even a quiet romantic getaway. Try fly-fishing on some of the
areas 200 miles of trout streams – rated as some of the best fishing
in the Mid-west. There are
thousands of acres of watershed property, where you can enjoy
mountain biking, birding, fishing, canoeing or take a horseback ride
on more than 40 miles of scenic trails. In the fall, the foliage is
gorgeous; there is snowmobiling, skiing and a world class complex of
ski jumping hills in the winter; golf shop or relax in the summer.
And there are plenty of festivals, arts and crafts and historical
celebrations to honor Westby’s Scandinavian heritage (come sample
the best of Norwegian flavors!). Certainly there is no shortage of
activities in any of the seasons – Westby has it all. “Whether you
are driving through for a day trip, passing by for a quick peek or
planning a week vacation, we welcome your visit.”
