Mercer, Wisconsin

Not long after the last great ice sheets retreated to the north – about 10,000 years ago – Paleo-Indians entered what is now Wisconsin and headed north.  By the middle of the 17th Century, a number of indigenous peoples inhabited Northern Wisconsin, including the Chippewa, who established and seasonally occupied a major village not far from Mercer, Wisconsin.  The area was rich in fresh water, furs, fish and game.

Loon Capital of the World

The Federal government made available inexpensive land and the railroads pushed ever farther to the north.  By the late 19th century, railroads had encouraged the development of the mining industry, followed by logging and the sawn timber to build the mines and the towns that sprang up to support them.  Although hearty crops such as potatoes and rutabagas could be grown in the area, today dairy farming is the most prevalent agricultural activity and hay is the crop in most fields.  And while hunters and anglers began to come to the area in the early part of the 20th century, their numbers were not great.

Today, Mercer is much the same as it was over a hundred years ago: a beautiful resort area in the vast and open country of the northern woods of Wisconsin, offering both travelers and residents alike the natural beauty and serenity of its surroundings.  This is authentic wilderness at its best, a great and unspoiled place to live and vacation.  With over 200 lakes that lie within a 20-mile radius, more than 125,000 acres of pristine water teaming with game fish, 300 miles of trout streams, almost 400,000 acres of forest land and abundant opportunity for recreation in all four seasons, if you can’t find it in Mercer… you probably won’t be able to find it at all.
