Manitowoc
-
Snuggled up against the shores of Lake Michigan, Manitowoc, Wisconsin was
once called by Native Americans “Mundeowk, Home of the Good spirit”. It
was so named because of its beautiful rivers and harbors. Humble
beginnings as a trading post founded by the Northwest Fur Company in 1795
led to the official founding of Manitowoc in 1836. Shipbuilding and
related maritime activities have always played a major role in the
development of the city – from early wooden sailing ships to submarines
during World War II. Today, the S.S. Badger – the only upscale passenger
vessel still sailing on the Great Lakes – makes Manitowoc her only
Wisconsin port. But Manitowoc is much more than that. Its rich history is
complimented by top-notch museums, performing arts, parks and numerous
other attractions. But perhaps her best asset is her people: caring,
friendly and helpful. Join them in Manitowoc – Wisconsin’s Maritime
Capitol!

Ship...Fun Ports - Part I
I have been
eagerly awaiting the opportunity to sail on the S.S. Badger since I
first laid eyes on her back in 2003 during her 50th year anniversary
celebration. |

Big Ship...Fun Ports - Part II
You might be wondering what to do having disembarked from the S.S.
Badger... We had
visited Manitowoc on one other occasion just less than two years ago,
so at least we had a pretty good feel for the layout of the town. |

Manitowoc, WI
This weekend I am going to take some time and squeeze
in another journey into Wisconsin. There is a city on the edge of
one of the greatest of the Great Lakes – Michigan – by the name of
Manitowoc, to which I have wanted to journey. |
