Tower & Vermilion Lake

Located on the south shore of Lake Vermilion, Tower Minnesota – in the Arrowhead region of the state and in 1883 organized as a village named in honor of the Philadelphia financier, Charlemagne Tower – is the oldest incorporated municipality north of Duluth. It was the lure of lumber and fur, and rumors of gold in the area that originally attracted settlers to the Northwoods. Fur traders used Lake Vermilion as one of their routes; prospectors and others pioneered the Vermillion Trail from Duluth. In those days it took three days and two nights to get to Tower by wagon from Duluth! Now easily accessed, Lake Vermilion is one of the most popular summer resort lakes in the region, attracting fisherman to the walleyes, northern pike, muskellunge and bass that are plentiful there. Others are attracted by the beauty of the scenery and wildlife.

Use the tip of the knife to follow th rib cage Filleting Smallmouth Bass
I'm convinced that there is no "easy" way to fillet a smallmouth bass (
Micropterus dolomieu)- at least I have never observed a way that is any easier than the way I learned.  And one of the major problems is the result of the incredibly thick bones of the rib cage.
Insuring Your Boat
When I bought my first boat, a friend asked me if I knew that a boat was defined as a hole in the water, into which I would be throwing a lot of money.  I chuckled... Read more

Fishing Report:  June 30, 2008

Hi Everybody,

It's hard to believe that the 4th of July has come and gone already. Our short summer season is half over already and I just started fishing a few short weeks ago.  The mayflies are hatching all over the east end this week, so most of the big bug hatches should be over soon. The Walleyes have been moving around a lot, chasing food and I expect them to be on their typical summer haunts very soon.

I'm having some success pulling blades on bottom bouncers this week. Crawlers and leeches are both catching fish at about the same pace right now.  However, I have caught most of my larger fish on crawlers. I'm fishing the bug hatch right now, concentrating on soft bottom flats in the mainlake. That bite won't last much longer, however right now it's been pretty good for me. Look for the action to move to the mainlake reefs and points in the next few days. Lindy rigs and crawlers will be the ticket when they set up on their summer locations.

The Smallmouth action in the shallows has begun to slow a little. You can still get them there, however the fast moving horizontal presentations have become much less effective. Jigs and soft plastics have been catching more fish this week.
My go to baits have been senco's and 3 and 4 inch tubes. Rocks, docks and saddle areas in the mainlake have been good for me this week. Lots of smaller males, with an occasional big female has been the norm this week.

Muskies can be frustrating at times and this week has been one of those times. I'm starting to see a number of fish, however I haven't been able to set the hook into very many lately. Mainlake points and islands have been good for me this week. Bucktails, small gliders and "Big" topwaters, have been moving most of my fish.

The early morning action has been slower than normal but I'm still moving fish in the shallows. The evening action on the rocks has been picking up with the rise in water temps this week. Mainlake temps are about 72 degrees right now, however we are expecting some cooler night time temps the rest of the week.

Have a great week everybody and please remember to put some back.

Vermilion, like most lake names in Northern Minnesota, pays homage to the Native Americans. It was known to the Chippewa as the "Lake of the Sunset Glow." Perhaps the name is the result of the fire-red horizon at sundown, perhaps the result of the incredible displays of aurora borealis. Whatever the case, the 365 islands, 1000 miles of shoreline, giant conifers, granite cliffs, and billions of stars sparkling like diamonds in the night time sky will leave you breathless. And whether you prefer fishing, boating, hiking, swimming, berry-picking, birding or just plain relaxing, Lake Vermilion is a great place for a great vacation!
