Orr, Minnesota
French fur trappers known as voyageurs were the first to settle the
vast and wild areas of northern Minnesota in the early 1800s. Working
with the Ojibwe Indians, they traveled the waters in huge birch bark
canoes, singing as they paddled, seeking the beaver for its luxurious
pelt. As the fur trade dwindled, the logging industry took its place
and the forests of Northern Minnesota began to fall to the ax of the
lumberjack. This attracted businessmen as well as farmers and
homesteaders. Just as the big pine trees started to go the way of the
beaver pelt, a new industry began to take their place: tourism.
