BORDER VIEW LODGE - LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT
Happy 4th of July! We are up north, but we have the summer heat! Temperatures have been in the 80’s the last few days. The weather has been great for enjoying the lake. Lots of people have been out cruising on the water, jet skiing, tubing, etc. And oh yeah, the fishing has been awesome. T-shirt weather and Walleye! July doesn’t mean slow fishing for Lake of the Woods. This lake just doesn’t seem to quit giving up fish!
Follow up:
We are still finding good numbers of Walleyes and a mix of Saugers out on the deeper mud flats. Mayflies are showing up, but it has not affected the bite. Our guides have been focusing their efforts in 29-32 FOW on the south end of the lake. Once in a while we’ve been heading farther north on the lake as well around the Garden Island area. It all depends on the weather/wind. Anchoring and jigging with a fathead minnow, frozen shiner, or a leech has been the way to go. The best jig color varies day to day, but gold, pink, chartreuse, or green are all safe bets. Drifting with live bait rigs has been boating fish as well. We may begin to do some downrigging soon as the water temperatures are warming up. It won’t be long and the Walleyes will be unable to resist a Rapala trolled by them.
July is shaping up to be another great month of fishing! Some of the better fishing can be a considerable distance away in July, making a charter trip the perfect choice to hunt down those Walleyes. We are currently offering July Specials on our charter fishing packages for guests that arrive on a Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday during the month of July. Call for details.
