BORDER VIEW LODGE - LAKE OF THE WOODS FISHING REPORT April 4, 2010
The BIG Walleye are in the river. Fishing has been nothing short of amazing this past week on the Rainy River. Numbers of Walleye being caught have been good, but the quality of fish has been ridiculous. Fish from 24-29 inches have been common with an occasional fish up to the 31 inch mark. These are fat fish too!
Water clarity is good on the river and the current is very manageable. Most fishermen are using...
Follow up:
a 3/8 ounce jig head or 1/2 ounce with a frozen shiner, fathead, or rainbow minnow. Bright colors such as pink and chartreuse have been popular. Boat control is key with the current and on some days the wind. Most fishermen are anchoring up or using a trolling motor to control their drift downstream or slowly work their way upstream. Vertical jigging is the way to go. Fish are coming from lots of different depths and different sections of the river. Fishing in anywhere from 10 – 25 feet of water can be good.
Some Sturgeon fishermen are out as well and catching fish. Lots of smaller fish, but we have heard of some around or over the 60 inch mark. Walleye fishermen have been getting into one now and then on accident too.
Quotes from the week:
“I caught more big Walleye today than I ever have”
“We must have caught over 20 Sturgeon”
“We caught every inch of Walleye from 22 to 28 inches”
“The toughest part about fishing was finding fish small enough to keep”
“I caught my personal best Walleye” (More than once)
