BORDER VIEW LODGE - LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT
It sure feels like March - temperatures have been in the upper 30’s and even low 40’s for much of the past week. The mild weather looks to continue into the next week. What a great time to be out on the lake! Snow is starting to melt, but the lake is in good shape still. The lake has about 30” of ice in most areas and about a foot of snow cover. Right now, the snow cover is doing a good job protecting the ice on sunny days. Don’t forget Walleye fishing is open until April 14 and Pike season does not close.
Follow up:
The Pike action has been HOT! A 41” and 42” were iced yesterday afternoon. Not many guests are out fishing for them, but the ones who are seem to be getting a good taste of what Lake of the Woods has to offer for big Pike. We are setting up in 6-12 FOW with tip-ups. Dead Herring, Smelt, Cisco or live Sucker minnows are all catching fish. A homemade rig or any type of quick strike rig with 2 big trebles will do the trick. Make sure you have a couple beads and spinners on there for added flash and to make the rig legal to fish with. We will provide tip-ups for guests that want to Pike fish for a full day. We have some fish houses set up to stay warm in while Pike fishing. With the nice weather many are sitting outside and watching tip-ups. If the sun is out and you plan on being outside all day, don’t forget some sunscreen!
Walleye, Sauger, and Perch fishing continues to be steady. Our houses are in a few areas. We have houses as close as a few miles and as far as 20+ miles out on the lake. The bite up at the reefs and in close has been comparable. A few more jumbo Perch are being caught in our houses up by Knight and Bridges though. They seem to hold to the rock structure more than the mud flats.
Some of the guides stumbled onto a new hot bait this week. We’ve rigged up Stop Signs with a short monofilament dropper and a single hook instead of the standard treble hook. With a full minnow it works great as a deadstick ;we have some available at the lodge.
Next winter we will have our own plowed road access.
$25 per person per night during April for Sturgeon fishing! The restaurant and bar will be open.
Fish On!
