We have been enjoying fantastic February weather here at Border View Lodge! Day time temperatures have been in the mid 20’s all week long. Temps look to cool down this upcoming week for a few days, but then rebound back into the 20’s for the weekend. The lake has anywhere from 28-32” of ice. There is a good amount of snow on it, and it is crusty. Our bomber trails continue to be kept in great shape!
How about the fishing?
Follow up:
Fishing has been steady for the week. The afternoon bite seems to more productive than the morning bite. We saw several fish in the 25-26” range and a few in the +28” range. Not a lot, but some jumbo Perch from 12-13” have been coming in everyday too. Fishing +20 miles north on the lake has been good with a nice mix or Walleye, Sauger, and Perch. Most of the fish are hanging within a couple feet of the bottom. The shorter bomber ride and fishing closer by on the south shore has been holding its own too. Our houses on the south end are 6-8 miles past Pine Island in 31-34 FOW. Guests are seeing some suspended fish. When those suspended Walleye come by out in the deep mud, it seems they will smack anything in front of them.
As always, Vexilars and other flashers are a big plus to have when fishing anywhere on the lake. It can certainly help a fisherman see how those finicky fish are acting below the ice, and help you figure out how to coax them into biting. Jigging seems to be putting more fish on the ice than dead sticking as of late. Glow red/pink and gold continue to be the go to colors. Frostee jigs and Gem-N-Eyes are good jigs to start with for a dead stick line. Even a plain #2 red hook and minnow can be good. For jigging, it seems you can’t go wrong with a glow red and gold Stop Sign. Other good lures have been Macho-Minnows, Rattlin’ Flyers, Buckshots and darters.
BIG Pike are starting to show up. More and more fish will start to move into the shallows to get ready to spawn as we head into the end of the month and into March. We have moved some houses in shallow for trophy Pike fishing. We can certainly accommodate groups that want to tip-up fish.
Fish On!
