BORDER VIEW LODGE - LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT
Fishing has been nothing short of fantastic during the last week. The lake is producing catches that you would expect from a renowned fishery; even if it is the middle of winter! We are fishing a couple of different areas now, and yes we are fishing +20 miles north around some reef structure.
Follow up:
It’s about an hour bomber ride on a good hard packed trail. We currently have houses set on a gradual gravel drop off in 29-32’ of water. We also have houses 6-9 miles out from Pine Island in the deep mud as well. The fish are deep, and because of that the action has been good throughout the day. You could hook a trophy Walleye at anytime! The big fish of the week was a 31” beauty. Pictures of that one coming soon on the website…
We had a motor coach trip in from Omaha, NE earlier in the week. A 30” Walleye weighing in at 10.8 pounds was the big fish for the group. Tim is pictured on the website with his trophy. We have another coach bus coming in from Appleton, WI on Sunday, February 21st. There are some spots still available.
Guests continue to catch a lot of Saugers. The quality has been better as of late. We have been seeing more keepers in the 14-15” range. However, there are lots of smaller bait stealers out there. They ensure some action at the very least when fishing slows down for a bit. Walleyes are being found generally in the bottom few feet and have been showing up in all sizes from 10” dinks to 31” trophies, which show how healthy the Walleye population in the lake is. The Perch are becoming more active now as well. Most houses are getting a few of them every day. The average fish is running around 12 inches!
We had some mild weather during the past week with most day time highs over 20 degrees. There is a storm system pushing through the area right now, and the weatherman is calling for 4-6” of the white stuff by Monday afternoon. Temperatures look to remain nice moving into the week with more daytime highs around or above 20 degrees. There is over 30” of ice on most of the lake now.
