BORDER VIEW LODGE - LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT
It sure feels like March - temperatures have been in the upper 30’s and even low 40’s for much of the past week. The mild weather looks to continue into the next week. What a great time to be out on the lake! Snow is starting to melt, but the lake is in good shape still. The lake has about 30” of ice in most areas and about a foot of snow cover. Right now, the snow cover is doing a good job protecting the ice on sunny days. Don’t forget Walleye fishing is open until April 14 and Pike season does not close.
SPECIAL EDITOR'S NOTE: Don't forget that unlike most all other areas of Wisconsin, the walleye, northern and bass season on many of the waters in the Central Wisconsin area DO NOT CLOSE. You don't have to just settle for panfish! Check ahead to make sure the water you want to fish is indeed one of those that remain "open."
Ice anglers enjoying solid action from crappies, bluegills and perch, along with taking some nice walleyes and northerns. A few open water anglers are getting out below area dams and having some very good success jigging for walleyes -- all going on in...
March here we come! Fishing was solid throughout the month of February. This past week was no different. Guests caught a good amount of Walleyes, not to mention the bonus species like Sauger, Perch, Eelpout, and Tullibee that Lake of the Woods has to offer. The big Walleye for the week, or at least the heaviest, was 29.5 inches and weighed 11.6 pounds. What a fat fish! The Northern action has been going well, there were a few over 42 in. last weekend.
Editor's note: The daily bag limit for walleyes on many lakes and the Wisconsin River in Central Wisconsin (always check the regulations on the particular water, first) is five (5) fish per day throughout the year while the daily bag limit for walleye in many areas north of Mosinee and Wausau may only be two to three fish because of Native American spearing initiatives and the resulting DNR "quota limits".
And don't forget that unlike most all other areas of Wisconsin, the walleye and northern season on many of the waters in the Central Wisconsin area DO NOT CLOSE. You don't have to just settle for panfish!
Ice Anglers are having a field day, as crappies, bluegills and perch hit hard, with walleye and northern doing "OK" in backwater areas;
Walleye and crappie are hitting on jigs tipped with minnows in Sand Bay and the best bite is early in the day. Other popular spots for walleye are near American Narrows, at the mouth of Black Bay and around the islands north of that. Most of the best fishing has been in the 30-35 foot depth range, but also in the shallower areas closer to the islands. The National Park Service ice road has greatly expanded access to the lake, just drive on at the Rainy Lake Visitor Center. Some big northern pike have been pulled from the mouths of Black Bay and Cranberry Bay and the best bait is a big minnow.
